Increasing Your Sponsor’s Income to Meet the Minimum......................................... 42 34 Fiancé & Marriage Visas N ot everyone marries a millionaire, unfortunately (or not). S. citizen or permanent resident half of the couple must reveal their financial situation to the immigration authorities. The purpose is to show that the petitioning fiancé or spouse has enough money to support the immigrant and to prevent him or her from becoming a public charge (the fancy term for going on welfare).

We’ll talk more about how to provide this evidence in the chapter matching your individual situation, below. Make your wedding plans flexible. You can’t know exactly how long it will take to get the fiancé visa, but you’ll have to hold your wedding within 90 days of entering the United States. Before you sign any contracts for catering, photographic, or other services, discuss the situation with the service providers and build some flexibility into your contracts or agreements in case the date needs to change.

Also see Chapter 16, Section D, “Sponsoring Other Family Members,” for help with children who aren’t eligible to immigrate at the same time as you. S. citizen, the picture changes. You will need to review Section 4b, above, to determine your children’s visa eligibility. At this point you should know whether you are eligible to apply for a marriage or a fiancé visa. If you are, read Chapters 3 and 4 before turning to the chapter that explains your application process in detail. ■ C H A P T E R 3 Meeting Income Requirements A.
